    The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. The FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health.

    WHO - World Health Organization - Food Safety Department.

    WHO provides scientific advice for Member States, other organizations and the public related to the safety of food. Recognizing the global nature of many food safety problems, linking national food safety systems and building the capacity of such systems is also an important task for WHO. Today food safety is one of WHO's top ten priorities and the Organization calls for more systematic and aggressive steps to be taken to significantly reduce the risk of foodborne diseases. Dealing with this challenge is one of the major challenges for the 21st century in regard to food safety, implying a significant redirection of preventative efforts in many parts of the world.

    National Food Authority - Republic of the Philippines.

    The National Food Authority was created through Presidential Decree No. 4 dated September 26, 1972, under the name National Grains Authority, with the mission of promoting the integrated growth and development of the grains industry covering rice, corn, feedgrains and other grains like sorghum, mongo, and peanut. This decree abolished two agencies, namely; the Rice and Corn Board (RICOB) and the Rice and Corn Administration (RCA) - the former discharging the regulatory function, while the latter was tasked with the marketing function.

    Bureau of Food and Drug Analysis, Department of Health - Executive Yuan, Republic of China - Taiwan.

    The Bureau of Food and Drug Analysis ( BFDA ) was established on September 20, 1978. At that time, the former Taiwan Provincial Hygienic Laboratory, originally founded in 1946, was reorganized. And the newly established institute was under the auspices of Department of Health as the BFDA. The purpose of establishing this institute is to provide the citizens and consumers in Taiwan ample health protection through implementing the safety regulation of foods and drugs. The proper control of quality of these products can only be achieved by setting high standards and conducting sound research of regulatorg science. To accomplish these challenging goals, BFDA has conducted research, collected data, analyzed food and drug samples to ensure the proper protection of the health of citizens in Taiwan.

    Food Standards Australia New Zealand.

    Food Standards Australia New Zealand (formerly ANZFA) protects the health and safety of the people in Australia and New Zealand by maintaining a safe food supply. We are a bi-national independent statutory authority that develops food standards for composition, labelling and contaminants, including microbiological limits, that apply to all foods produced or imported for sale in Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, Food Standards Australia New Zealand develops food standards to cover the whole of the food supply chain - from paddock to plate - for both the food manufacturing industry and primary producers. Food Standards Australia New Zealand works in partnership with Australia' s Commonwealth, State and Territory governments and the New Zealand Government. We also seek to engage industry, consumers and public health professionals in our work. Food Standards Australia New Zealand has offices in Canberra, Australia and Wellington, New Zealand. Our mission: To protect, in collaboration with others, the health and safety of people in Australia and New Zealand through the maintenance of a safe food supply.

    The Food Directorate is part of a national food safety system that involves Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and provinces, territories and municipalities. Our primary responsibility is to establish policies and standards related to food safety and nutrition. Our focus is in the following areas: chemical and microbiological contaminants of foods, such as heavy metals or E. coli , food additives, such as aspartame , food processes such as canning and irradiation , novel foods, including genetically modified foods , nutrition, including vitamins and nutrients , transmissible spongiform encephalopathies . Our key activities in these areas include: conducting scientific research conducting health risk and benefit assessments developing policies, standards and guidelines, such as for approval of new food additives evaluating submissions from the food industry providing information to support Canadians in their decisions about food and diet. We carry out our responsibilities under the authority of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations and the Department of Health Act . In addition, under the authority of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Act , the Directorate assesses the effectiveness of the activities of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) that are related to food safety. Our Vision: To be the most trusted authority providing policies, standards, advice and information on the safety and nutritional value of food. Our Mission: In support of Health Canada's mission to help Canadians, maintain and improve their health, the Food Directorate is the federal health authority responsible for establishing policies, setting standards and providing advice and information on the safety and nutritional value of food.

    FSAI - Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

    The Food Safety Authority of Ireland was established under the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act, 1998. The Act was enacted in July 1998 and came into effect on 01 January 1999. The principal function of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is to take all reasonable steps to ensure that food produced, distributed or marketed in the State meets the highest standards of food safety and hygiene reasonably available and to ensure that food complies with legal requirements, or where appropriate with recognised codes of good practice. The Authority is a statutory, independent and science-based body, dedicated to protecting public health and consumer interests in the area of food safety and hygiene. It comes under the aegis of the Minister for Health and Children and currently has a board of ten. It also has a 15 member Scientific Committee that assists and advises the Board. Therefore, decisions relating to food safety and hygiene take account of the latest and best scientific advice and information available.

    Develop, consolidate, and coordinate policies - Develop general plans on food safety management - Surveillance for food contamination and adulteration - Develop drug safety plans for including cosmetics, medical devices, narcotics, etc. - Approve manufactured or imported drugs and biologics - Control safety and review standards and specifications for foods, drugs and medical devices - Develop research, study, evaluation and analysis methods on foods, drugs and medical devices - NITR scientifically tests, reviews and evaluates the safety and/or efficacy data submitted for approval regarding foods and new drugs. - Each agency serves as a field operational base, conducting food and drug surveillance and inspection of imported foods in its local laboratories.

    Ministry of Food Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

    The overall objective of food policy in Bangladesh is to ensure food security for all citizens, where food security is defined as access by all people at all times to sufficient food to meet their minimum dietary requirements for a healthy and productive life. Food security has three components: (1) availability of food through market or public distribution channels, (2) access to food, as determined by household’s income, other resources, government program and market prices and (3) utilization of food by individuals, as determined by actual food intake and their physical absorption of nutrients. A Comprehensive Food Security Policy July 2000 has already been formulated and formulation of the new National Food Policy is under process.

    The National Food Agency is responsible for directing, planning and developing food control in Finland and for conducting control. Activities cover the control of all foodstuffs from field to fork. The National Food Agency guides the municipal food control authorities, provincial governments and the National Board of Customs, which perform the practical control.

    Food security is an issue of paramount importance to any country. One of MAFS’s key responsibilities is to coordinate all issues relevant in ensuring the country is sustainably food secure. For this to be realized, MAFS has to strengthen its capacity to monitor and evaluate food production levels and requirements in the country. Its Early Warning System, which is instrumental in monitoring food production in the country, needs to be strengthened.
